How IBA Involvement Impacts Development and Leadership

Becoming a good leader is not easy and does not happen overnight. It is a journey involving self-awareness of our strengths and weaknesses, taking advantage of opportunities given to us, and understanding that to grow, we may need to step outside our comfort zone. My involvement with the Indiana Bankers Association over the years has helped me evolve into the leader I am today.

The IBA has made me a better banker and a better person. Over my entire career, I’ve attended countless classes, seminars, retreats, meetings and social events. Each one was an opportunity to listen and learn. IBA leadership development courses provided the foundation. Interaction with peers and colleagues at IBA events helped build social and communication skills. Opportunities to serve on boards and committees allowed me to improve my leadership skills outside the bank.

I’ve been in banking for almost 25 years. From my first year on the job, the IBA has been an important component of my development. I was fortunate to attend several events early in my career with my father, who was president/CEO of the bank at the time. He would introduce me to bankers from all over the state who were peers and longtime friends. They welcomed me with open arms and provided guidance whenever needed, and many still do today. Being able to listen as the “old guard” at IBA events discussed challenges and issues in our industry was better than any training I could get from a class or book.

Now that I may be one of the old guard myself, I challenge all the members of the IBA Future Leadership Division to work every day to be the best version of themselves. Utilize the tools offered by the IBA. Stretch outside your comfort zone and take advantage of leadership opportunities at the IBA. Use the IBA to widen your network. Not only will this make you a better banker, but you will establish friendships that will last a lifetime.
