State Rep. Jeff Thompson, R-Lizton, has been named 2023 Legislator of the Year by the Indiana Bankers Association. The award was presented Monday, Aug. 28, at the IBA Annual Convention in French Lick.
The Legislator of the Year award recognizes Rep. Thompson for his stewardship of a strong banking environment in the Hoosier State. Thompson has been a tireless supporter of the banking industry during his time in the General Assembly. He serves as chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, a position he was named to last year after serving as a committee member since 2003. Through his committee role, Thompson has been instrumental in ensuring that Indiana remains conducive to a healthy banking industry. His adept stewardship facilitated the passage of legislation through his committee positively affecting economic development within the state. Thompson has been a quiet and powerful force for good for the banking industry and is most deserving of this recognition.
"Everyday Hoosiers, local businesses and our economy count on Indiana's strong banking institutions," Thompson said. "It's important that our policies support a banking environment that helps deliver better service, accessibility and opportunities to our communities, large and small. I appreciate this recognition by the IBA and look forward to continuing to support efforts that help our financial institutions meet the needs of all Hoosiers."
Thompson represents House District 28, which includes portions of Hendricks, Boone and Montgomery counties. In addition to chairing the powerful Ways and Means Committee, he is also a member of several interim committees, including House vice-chair of the State and Local Tax Review Task Force that will study and make recommendations on potential changes to Indiana’s tax system.
Thompson is a retired chemistry, physics and math teacher who worked at Danville Community High School for more than 30 years. He previously served on the Indiana State Fair Board and Indiana State Fair Commission and spent 12 years as a member of the Hendricks County 4-H Fair Board. Thompson currently serves as vice chair of the board at North Salem State Bank and owns a small hay and straw business. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Purdue University.
“Rep. Thompson is an honorable public servant and a true champion for our state,” said Dax Denton, chief policy officer for the IBA. “He is passionate about bettering the state in every way he can, and we are fortunate to have him at the Statehouse authoring key bills to maintain a healthy banking environment. The Indiana Bankers Association is pleased to name Rep. Thompson as the 2023 IBA Legislator of the Year.”
